Pearland woman savors life as personal chef

July 15, 2010
Russell, who grew up in Lake Charles, La., has a bachelor 's degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

“I planned to be a home economics teacher,” she said. “I think it 's really important children know what to eat and are aware of food additives.”

But after graduation, Russell focused more on family life, and later on children Myra and Myron Jr., now 11 and 9. “I’ve always been at home with my babies,” she said.
Over time, she developed the idea of sharing her food knowledge and skills with others as a business.
“I 've always collected cookbooks and clipped newspaper articles. I thought it would be really cool if I could prepare healthy meals for people,” Russell said.

Her husband, Myron, showed her an ad for the Culinary Business Academy in Rio Rancho, N.M., a program geared toward entrepreneurs. “It was exactly what I was talking about,” said Rhonda Russell, who completed the intense week long training in 2006.

Russell got her first personal chef assignment in September 2006, a romantic dinner for two requested by one of her husband 's clients. She enlisted an aunt from out of town to help and hired a local restaurant worker to serve the filet mignon meal. “That went really well,” she said. “So, then I started getting calls from people wanting meals." She built her business, Southern Doll Personal Chef Service, through word of mouth, her Web site and the Hire a Chef link found on the USPCA site, www.uspca.com.
